The Subaru Impreza WRX STI GD/GG is a 4-door sedan produced in Ota, Japan, from 2001 to 2007 at the Subaru assembly plant. The WRX is an acronym for “World Rally eXperimental,” as this iteration of the Impreza is custom-made for off-road competitions. The WRX STI GD/GG features a 2.5 TURBO 6MT AWD engine that produces a maximum power of 305 HP and 290 lb-ft of torque, which takes the car from 0-62 MPH in 4.4 seconds. The top speed for this Impreza is 174 MPH, and it comes with a 6-speed manual, including an overdrive option. It has a curb weight of around 3350 Lb and measures 175x72x56.3 inches.
The current value of this much-improved Impreza is around $20,000. It includes 17-in painted BBS aluminum wheels, a high-performance STI sport-tuned 4-wheel independent suspension system, and Brembo brakes with ABS on the four wheels. 2001: Subaru launched the second generation Impreza models in the Japanese market for the 2001 Model year.
2002: The WRX STi GD/GG debuted in international markets, including a significant release in the United States with the GD chassis. The U.S. model had the 2.0L EJ205 engine with slightly less power than the Japanese version. Other markets received different tuning, but all models retained the signature all-wheel-drive system and sport-tuned suspension.
2003: Subaru introduced minor updates, including interior refinements and new exterior colors. The STi models continued to focus on performance with adjustable center differentials for enhanced traction. The Japanese model also saw slight updates in engine management for improved efficiency.
2004: This year marked the introduction of the “Blobeye” facelift for the GD model. The U.S. market received the WRX STi with the larger 2.5L EJ257 engine, producing around 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. It featured Brembo brakes, Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD), a large rear wing, and unique STi seats, setting it apart from the standard WRX. The international versions received similar upgrades, with the EJ207 engine remaining in Japan.
2005: Subaru made slight improvements to handling with stiffer suspension settings and minor interior updates for better comfort and convenience. The WRX STi maintained its distinctive performance-focused design, with minimal changes in powertrain but further fine-tuning of the all-wheel-drive system.
2006: The “Hawkeye” facelift brought revised headlights, a new front bumper design, and other styling tweaks, giving the STi a more aggressive look. Performance and engine specs remained similar, with the U.S. model retaining the 2.5L EJ257 engine. Subaru also updated the DCCD to offer a wider range of adjustability, further enhancing its track and rally capabilities.
2007: The final year of the GD/GG generation saw minimal changes, as Subaru prepared to transition to the new GR platform. Limited edition models, such as the WRX STi Limited in the U.S., offered a more refined, less aggressive exterior with a smaller rear spoiler, leather seats, and other premium touches, appealing to buyers looking for a more understated STi.
