O Toyota MR2 Spyder (comercializado como MR-S no Japão) representa a terceira geração da evolução do chassi W30 da linhagem de roadsters com motor central da Toyota, produzido entre 1999 e 2007 como um esportivo leve conversível que privilegia a dinâmica de condução em detrimento da potência absoluta. Introduzido após a descontinuação da segunda geração SW20, o W30 mudou a filosofia do desempenho turboalimentado para a simplicidade aspirada naturalmente, empregando um motor 1.8L 1ZZ-FED de quatro cilindros em linha produzindo 138hp, combinado a uma transmissão manual de cinco marchas ou a uma Sequential Manual Transmission de seis velocidades que transmite a força para as rodas traseiras através da configuração de motor central. Pesando apenas 2.195 libras graças à filosofia minimalista que elimina teto fixo, acessórios elétricos e isolamento acústico, o Spyder alcançou uma dinâmica peso-potência excepcional, proporcionando uma experiência de condução envolvente apesar dos números modestos de potência. O chassi conta com suspensão dianteira do tipo MacPherson e geometria traseira revisada que melhora a resposta na entrada de curvas em comparação com as tendências de snap-oversteer do SW20, que desafiavam motoristas menos experientes. A Toyota posicionou o W30 como um carro acessível para track days e para curvas em estradas sinuosas, e não como um gran turismo, refletido no interior espartano, desprovido de confortos, mas que oferece uma direção direta e uma posição de condução intimista. A produção abrangeu duas grandes atualizações: os modelos pré-facelift de 1999 a 2002 e as versões pós-facelift de 2003 a 2007, que receberam faróis revisados, acabamento interno atualizado e pequenos ajustes na suspensão. A opção de Sequential Manual Transmission foi a tentativa da Toyota com tecnologia automanual automatizada, mas revelou-se comercialmente malsucedida devido à lentidão nas trocas de marcha e funcionamento às vezes brusco, permanecendo a transmissão manual tradicional a escolha preferida entre os entusiastas. As vendas do Spyder no mercado americano totalizaram aproximadamente 27.000 unidades ao longo de nove anos-modelo antes da descontinuação sem substituto direto, já que a Toyota saiu do segmento de esportivos acessíveis até a colaboração no 86/GR86 com a Subaru. Hoje, os W30 MR2 ocupam um nicho único entre os entusiastas como o último roadster Toyota com motor central acessível, valorizado por seu potencial de preparação, construção leve que permite desempenho competitivo em autocross e track days, e pela comum utilização de peças com modelos Toyota convencionais, reduzindo os custos de manutenção em comparação com alternativas europeias de motor central.
