The Chevrolet Corvette C5, produced from 1997 to 2004, represented a major evolution for the Corvette, introducing a more refined design, improved performance, and modernized technology. Built on a new platform, the C5 featured a lightweight yet rigid structure that greatly enhanced handling and stability. It was powered by the all-new LS1 5.7-liter V8 engine, which produced 345 horsepower initially and later increased to 350 horsepower, delivering strong acceleration and a satisfying V8 rumble. Paired with either a six-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission, the C5 achieved impressive performance, reaching 0-60 mph in under 5 seconds.
The C5’s design was a blend of classic Corvette styling cues with a more aerodynamic, streamlined shape. Available in coupe, convertible, and later a fixed-roof hardtop body style, it offered versatility for different driving experiences. Inside, the C5 featured a more driver-focused and comfortable cabin than previous models, with improved ergonomics, leather seating, and an updated digital-analog instrument cluster. The C5 also introduced features like a head-up display and an active handling system, making it a significant leap forward in both performance and technology for the Corvette lineup.

1997: The C5 Corvette debuted with a new 5.7L LS1 V8 engine producing 345 hp and a rear-mounted transaxle for improved weight distribution. The redesigned chassis and suspension also delivered improved handling and comfort compared to previous generations.
1998: The convertible body style was introduced, offering open-air driving for the first time on the C5 platform. Chevrolet also refined the suspension and added minor interior upgrades.
1999: This year saw the introduction of the hardtop "fixed-roof coupe" (FRC) model, a lighter, more rigid version aimed at enthusiasts who valued performance over luxury features.
2000: Minor updates included improved reliability for the LS1 engine, refinements to the active handling system, and new color options. Chevrolet continued to enhance the Corvette’s interior and comfort features.
2001: The high-performance Z06 model was introduced, replacing the FRC with a 5.7L LS6 V8 engine producing 385 hp, upgraded suspension, and a lighter curb weight, making it track-focused and one of the best-performing C5 variants.
2003: The 50th Anniversary Edition package was introduced with unique exterior and interior styling, magnetic selective ride control, and special badging. Minor tweaks were made across all models, including improved ride quality.
2004: The final production year of the C5, featuring the same design and performance features as previous years, as Chevrolet prepared for the transition to the C6 generation.
