La Toyota MR2 Spyder (commercializzata come MR-S in Giappone) rappresenta l’evoluzione della terza generazione del telaio W30 della linea di roadster a motore centrale di Toyota, prodotta dal 1999 al 2007 come sportiva leggera cabriolet, con un’enfasi sulla dinamica di guida più che sulla pura potenza. Introdotta a seguito della fine della seconda generazione SW20, la W30 ha cambiato filosofia, passando da prestazioni turbo a una semplicità naturalmente aspirata, adottando un motore 1.8L 1ZZ-FED a quattro cilindri in linea da 138hp, abbinato a un cambio manuale a 5 marce oppure a un cambio sequenziale manuale a 6 rapporti che trasmette la trazione alle ruote posteriori attraverso una configurazione a motore centrale. Con un peso di soli 2.195 libbre grazie a un design minimalista che elimina il tetto rigido, gli accessori elettrici e l’isolamento acustico, la Spyder ottiene un eccezionale rapporto peso-potenza che consente un’esperienza di guida coinvolgente nonostante i modesti valori di potenza. Il telaio monta un avantreno a sospensioni MacPherson e una geometria posteriore rivista per migliorare la risposta in inserimento curva rispetto alle tendenze al sovrasterzo improvviso della SW20, che mettevano alla prova i piloti meno esperti. Toyota ha posizionato la W30 più come un’auto accessibile per il fine settimana in pista e per la guida tortuosa, piuttosto che come una gran turismo, riflesso in un abitacolo spartano privo di comfort ma capace di offrire un feeling diretto allo sterzo e una posizione di guida raccolta. La produzione ha visto due principali aggiornamenti: i modelli pre-facelift dal 1999 al 2002 e le versioni post-facelift dal 2003 al 2007, con fari rivisti, interni aggiornati e leggere modifiche alla sospensione. L’opzione del cambio sequenziale manuale rappresentava il tentativo di Toyota di introdurre una tecnologia automatizzata manuale, ma si rivelò un insuccesso commerciale a causa dei tempi di cambiata lenti e di una guida a scatti, mentre il tradizionale cambio manuale rimase la scelta preferita dagli appassionati. Le vendite del Spyder nel mercato americano hanno raggiunto circa 27.000 unità in nove anni modello prima della dismissione senza un diretto sostituto, momento in cui Toyota uscì dal segmento delle sportive accessibili fino alla collaborazione 86/GR86 con Subaru. Oggi le W30 MR2 occupano una nicchia unica tra gli appassionati come ultimi roadster mid-engine Toyota accessibili, apprezzate per il loro potenziale di elaborazione, la costruzione leggera che consente prestazioni competitive in autocross e track day, e la condivisione di componenti con modelli Toyota più comuni che riduce i costi di gestione rispetto alle alternative europee a motore centrale.
