La Honda S2000 AP2 è una roadster convertibile prodotta dal 2004 al 2009 nello stabilimento di assemblaggio di Suzuka, vicino al leggendario Circuito Internazionale di Suzuka in Giappone. La designazione S2000 deriva dal suo motore F22C1 I4 da 2,2 litri, famoso all'epoca per avere la più alta potenza per litro di tutte le auto prodotte in serie senza turbocompressore, con 240 CV. La designazione AP2 distingue questo modello di seconda generazione dall'AP1 originale (2000-2003), rappresentando un raffinamento completo della filosofia purista della roadster Honda. L'evoluzione meccanica più significativa si concentra sul motore: mentre l'AP1 presentava la celebrata unità F20C da 2,0 litri con un regime stratosferico di 8.800 giri/min, il propulsore F22C da 2,2 litri dell'AP2 scambia la capacità di regime estremo con prestazioni migliorate nel mondo reale. La cilindrata maggiore fornisce 162 lb-ft di coppia (contro 153 lb-ft nell'AP1), creando un'accelerazione più forte nel medio regime nonostante il regime massimo ridotto di 8.200 giri/min. Questo rende l'AP2 notevolmente più gestibile su circuiti tecnici dove la coppia in uscita di curva risulta più preziosa della potenza massima ad alti regimi.

Honda ha apportato revisioni cruciali alla geometria delle sospensioni che hanno trasformato il comportamento della S2000 in pista. Gli ingegneri hanno ridotto la convergenza posteriore da -0,19 gradi a -0,05 gradi in deflessione da dosso e abbassato il centro di rollio posteriore da 101 mm a 92 mm, affrontando la tendenza dell'AP1 al sovrasterzo improvviso al limite. Combinati con molle più morbide e barre antirollio riviste, questi cambiamenti hanno creato una piattaforma più progressiva e prevedibile che premia la guida abile senza le caratteristiche da filo del rasoio che sfidavano alcuni piloti dell'AP1. Il cambio ha ricevuto sincronizzatori in fibra di carbonio sostituendo le unità in ottone dell'AP1, riducendo il peso e migliorando la qualità del cambio, con rapporti di trasmissione accorciati del 4% dalla prima alla quarta e una sesta marcia leggermente più lunga per una crociera autostradale rilassata.

Le prestazioni in pista convalidano queste decisioni ingegneristiche. L'AP2 dimostra un equilibrio eccezionale grazie alla sua perfetta distribuzione del peso 50/50 e al compatto passo di 2.400 mm, registrando tempi sul giro impressionanti su circuiti diversi—da piste tecniche come Motorsport Ranch (1:20.0) a layout ad alta velocità come Chuckwalla Valley Raceway (1:58.6). Il telaio rimane composto sotto frenate intense e offre una risposta precisa in ingresso curva, mentre le sospensioni riviste consentono ai piloti di sfruttare l'intero potenziale prestazionale con maggiore fiducia rispetto all'AP1 occasionalmente nervoso.

Per le massime prestazioni in pista, Honda ha offerto l'edizione S2000 Club Racer (CR) nel 2008-2009, producendo solo 699 esemplari. La CR presentava uno sterzo più rapido, sospensioni più rigide, pneumatici posteriori più larghi (255/40R-17 Bridgestone Potenza RE070) e un'aggressiva riduzione di peso inclusa la climatizzazione e lo stereo eliminati (opzionali come aggiunte), risparmiando 90 libbre. I caratteristici cerchi neri della CR, l'interno in Alcantara giallo e l'indicatore luminoso di potenza massima identificavano questa variante orientata alla pista, che ora raggiunge oltre 108.000 $ rispetto al suo MSRP originale di 36.935 $.

Il mercato aftermarket ha abbracciato la piattaforma AP2 con entusiasmo, con modifiche popolari tra cui la rimappatura ECU Hondata FlashPro (aumentando il limite di giri a 8.600 giri/min), upgrade di aspirazione e scarico, e componenti sospensioni avanzati di produttori come KW e Ohlins. 2004: The AP2 generation was introduced with significant updates to improve performance and handling. The engine was upgraded to the 2.2L F22C1 inline-four, increasing torque to 162 lb-ft and lowering the redline to 8000 rpm while maintaining 237 hp. This provided a more usable power band, especially for daily driving. Suspension geometry was revised to improve stability and reduce oversteer, making it more predictable at the limit. Additionally, the AP2 featured new front and rear bumpers, updated taillights, and a slightly restyled interior.
2006: Honda made updates to the drive-by-wire throttle system for smoother throttle response and introduced traction control (Vehicle Stability Assist, or VSA) as an option. Minor improvements were made to the interior, including updated seat materials for added durability and comfort.
2008: The CR (Club Racer) edition was introduced as a more hardcore, track-focused variant of the S2000. The CR featured a stiffer suspension setup, reduced weight through the removal of the convertible top (a removable hardtop was included), and a more aggressive aero package with a large rear wing and front lip spoiler for additional downforce. The CR’s interior had fewer amenities, with added chassis bracing for increased rigidity, making it a sought-after model for track enthusiasts.
2009: The final production year of the S2000. Honda made no major changes as production wound down. The AP2 ended its run as one of the most celebrated roadsters, combining high-revving performance with precise handling.
