Der Toyota MR2 Spyder (in Japan als MR-S vermarktet) stellt die dritte Generation des W30-Chassis in Toyotas Mittelmotor-Roadster-Linie dar und wurde von 1999 bis 2007 als leichter, offener Sportwagen produziert, der fahrdynamische Eigenschaften über reine Leistung stellt. Nach dem Ende der zweiten Generation SW20 eingeführt, veränderte der W30 die Philosophie von turboaufgeladenem Performance-Charakter hin zu einer natürlich-aspirierten Simplizität, indem er den 1,8-Liter 1ZZ-FED Vierzylinder mit 138 PS einsetzte, gekoppelt an ein manuelles Fünfgang-Getriebe oder wahlweise das Sechsgang-Sequential Manual Transmission, welche die Hinterräder in Mittelmotoranordnung antreiben. Mit einem Gewicht von nur 995 kg dank minimalistischer Bauweise ohne festes Dach, auf elektrische Helfer und Dämmmaterial weitgehend verzichtet, erreicht der Spyder eine herausragende Leistungsgewichtsbilanz, die trotz moderater Leistung ein mitreißendes Fahrerlebnis erlaubt. Das Fahrwerk verfügt vorne über MacPherson-Federbeine und an der Hinterachse über eine überarbeitete Geometrie, welche das Einlenkverhalten im Vergleich zum SW20 mit seinen gelegentlichen plötzlichen Übersteuertendenzen, die weniger erfahrenen Fahrern Schwierigkeiten bereiteten, deutlich verbessert. Toyota positionierte den W30 als erschwinglichen Wochenend-Track- und Kurvenjäger anstatt als Grand-Touring-Cruiser, was sich im spartanischen Innenraum ohne Komfortextras, dafür mit direktem Lenkgefühl und enger Fahrposition widerspiegelt. Die Produktion umfasst zwei große Modellperioden: die vor dem Facelift von 1999 bis 2002 sowie die Nachfacelift-Modelle von 2003 bis 2007 mit überarbeiteten Scheinwerfern, aktualisierter Innenraumgestaltung und geringfügigen Fahrwerksanpassungen. Die Sequential Manual Transmission war Toyotas Versuch einer automatisierten manuellen Schaltung, erwies sich jedoch wegen langsamer Schaltzeiten und ruckartigem Ansprechverhalten als kommerziell wenig erfolgreich, weshalb das klassische Handschaltgetriebe unter Enthusiasten bevorzugt blieb. In den USA wurden etwa 27.000 Spyder über neun Modelljahre verkauft, bevor die Baureihe ohne direkten Nachfolger eingestellt wurde, da Toyota bis zur 86/GR86-Kooperation mit Subaru im Segment erschwinglicher Sportwagen pausierte. Heute nehmen die W30 MR2s eine einzigartige Nische unter Enthusiasten ein als letzte erschwingliche Mittelmotor-Roadster von Toyota, geschätzt wegen ihres Tuningspotenzials, des geringen Fahrzeuggewichts, das konkurrenzfähige Leistungen bei Autocross und Track Days ermöglicht, sowie der Teilekompatibilität mit gängigen Toyota-Modellen, die die Unterhaltskosten im Vergleich zu europäischen Mittelmotoralternativen reduziert.
