Note

La Toyota MR2 W20 (spesso indicata come la seconda generazione della MR2) è stata prodotta dal 1989 al 1999. Questa generazione ha introdotto un design più grande e raffinato rispetto alla prima MR2, con uno stile ispirato alle auto sportive esotiche dell’epoca, conferendole un aspetto slanciato e aggressivo. La W20 MR2 ha mantenuto la configurazione a motore centrale e trazione posteriore, garantendo un eccellente equilibrio e maneggevolezza.

La W20 MR2 era disponibile con due motorizzazioni principali:

  1. 2.2L 5S-FE quattro cilindri in linea: aspirato, con una potenza di circa 130 hp, destinato principalmente al mercato statunitense.
  2. 2.0L 3S-GTE quattro cilindri in linea turbo: disponibile nelle versioni turbo, con una potenza di circa 200 hp negli USA e fino a 245 hp in Giappone. La MR2 turbo offriva un notevole incremento delle prestazioni, con uno 0-60 mph in meno di 6 secondi, rendendola competitiva con le sportive di fascia alta dell’epoca.

1989: The second-generation MR2 (W20) launched in Japan with two engine options: a 2.0L naturally aspirated 3S-GE engine and the 2.0L turbocharged 3S-GTE engine, producing around 220 hp in Japan. This model featured a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, with a design inspired by exotic sports cars, giving it a sleek, aerodynamic appearance.
1990: The MR2 W20 was introduced in the U.S., with a 2.2L 5S-FE naturally aspirated engine (130 hp) and the 2.0L 3S-GTE turbocharged engine (200 hp). The U.S. turbo version came with larger brakes, a limited-slip differential, and upgraded suspension.
1992: Minor refinements were introduced, with improvements to materials and slight interior upgrades. Toyota made adjustments to the car’s stability systems to improve handling characteristics, but the core design and performance remained largely the same.
1993: Toyota made significant suspension revisions to address the MR2's tendency toward snap oversteer. The rear suspension geometry was modified, and sway bars were added, improving stability and reducing oversteer, making the car more forgiving at the limit. The turbocharged model received upgraded brakes for better stopping power, and interior options were expanded with updated upholstery choices.
1996: The MR2 was discontinued in the U.S. market, but it continued to be sold in Japan and select other markets. Japanese models received slight power increases for the 3S-GE engine, and Toyota made further refinements to improve overall quality and reliability.
