La Chevrolet Corvette C7 Z06 rappresenta la variante di punta ad alte prestazioni di settima generazione di General Motors, prodotta dal 2015 al 2019 come derivato sovralimentato e orientato alla pista della piattaforma C7 Stingray, pensata per gli appassionati che cercano prestazioni da supercar accessibili. Presentata al North American International Auto Show del 2014, la C7 Z06 segna il ritorno alla sovralimentazione dopo la generazione C6 Z06 a aspirazione naturale, incorporando una powertrain completamente rivista, aerodinamica e componenti telaistiche che trasformano la Corvette base in una credibile arma da pista, in grado di competere con Porsche 911 GT3, Nissan GT-R e concorrenti esotici europei a un prezzo decisamente inferiore. Prodotta presso lo stabilimento Bowling Green Assembly Plant nel Kentucky, la C7 Z06 ha stabilito credenziali prestazionali impressionanti con uno 0-60 MPH in 2,95 secondi e una velocità massima di 186 MPH, mentre i primi anni modello hanno sofferto di noti problemi di surriscaldamento durante l’uso prolungato in pista, portando GM a estendere la garanzia e rivedere il sistema di raffreddamento per la produzione dal 2017 in poi.
Il motore V8 LT4 da 6.2 litri sovralimentato produce 650 cavalli a 6.400 giri/minuto con 650 libbre-piedi di coppia a 3.600 giri/minuto grazie al compressore Eaton R1740 TVS da 1,7 litri che arriva a 20.000 giri/minuto generando una pressione di sovralimentazione di 9,4 PSI. Il rapporto di compressione di 10,0:1 bilancia l’efficienza della sovralimentazione con la compatibilità alla benzina senza piombo, mentre il sistema di lubrificazione a carter secco permette curve aggressive senza rischi di carenza di olio tipici dei sistemi a carter umido. La potenza viene trasmessa tramite la scelta tra il cambio manuale Tremec TR6070 a sette marce con tecnologia di sincronizzazione dei giri o l’automatico Hydramatic 8L90 a otto rapporti con paddle al volante e programmazione Performance Algorithm Transmission (PAT) che ottimizza i punti di cambiata per l’uso in pista. Il tubo di trasmissione in fibra di carbonio collega il motore al transaxle posteriore, mantenendo una distribuzione dei pesi quasi perfetta 50/50, elemento fondamentale per i vantaggi dell’architettura Corvette a motore centrale anteriore. Le prime calibrazioni del cambio automatico hanno contribuito in modo significativo ai problemi di surriscaldamento 2015-2016, causati da rapporti ravvicinati che mantenevano regimi motore più alti durante sessioni prolungate in pista rispetto al cambio manuale, che prevedeva rapporti più lunghi e cambi marcia controllati dal pilota.
L’ingegneria del telaio combina una struttura a traliccio in alluminio con cofano, tetto e pannelli posteriori in fibra di carbonio, riducendo il peso a vuoto a 1.598 chilogrammi (3.524 libbre) nella configurazione con Z07 Performance Package e freni carboceramici. Il sistema di sospensioni adattive Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 offre una regolazione continua della rigidità con Performance Traction Management (PTM) che integra controllo trazione, controllo di stabilità e differenziale elettronico a slittamento limitato programmabile con cinque modalità selezionabili dal guidatore, da Weather a Track. L’opzionale Z07 Performance Package (8.995 $) include obbligatoriamente il Carbon Fiber Aero Package e aggiunge freni Brembo carboceramici con dischi da 15,7 pollici all’anteriore e 15,4 pollici al posteriore, calibrazione specifica delle sospensioni FE7 e pneumatici Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R ZP montati su ruote leggere in fibra di carbonio. Lo sviluppo aerodinamico comprende splitter anteriore aggressivo, dive planes, spoiler posteriore con estensioni a “wickerbill” e strisce sotto la carrozzeria che generano un sostanziale carico aerodinamico in velocità, pur creando sfide di raffreddamento risolte con un nuovo design del cofano che nella versione 2017 in poi alza la sezione centrale migliorando il flusso d’aria al radiatore.
La controversia sul surriscaldamento ha dominato l’esperienza iniziale dei possessori della C7 Z06, colpendo in particolare le versioni del cambio automatico 2015-2016 durante le giornate in pista, con temperature di motore e trasmissione che attivavano modalità di riduzione della potenza per protezione limitando le prestazioni durante operazioni ad alto carico prolungate. GM ha implementato una copertura estesa della garanzia per gli anni modello 2015-2018 con retrofit di radiatori conforme alle specifiche 2019, calibrazioni riviste del cambio automatico, programmazione del controllo motore modificata per anticipare l’attivazione delle ventole di raffreddamento e geometria del coperchio intercooler rialzata per migliorare la dissipazione del calore. Soluzioni aftermarket offerte da Callaway, LG Motorsports e tuner specializzati propongono revisioni complete del sistema di raffreddamento che superano i 10.000 $, affrontando limiti fondamentali nella gestione termica dovuti ai vincoli del packaging sovralimentato. Il model year 2017 ha introdotto miglioramenti di raffreddamento di fabbrica, incluso il cofano con sezione centrale rialzata, aumento della capacità del radiatore, programmazioni trasmissione aggiornate e design migliorato dell’intercooler, riducendo sostanzialmente i problemi termici rispetto alla produzione precedente. La produzione si è conclusa nel 2019 con l’introduzione dell’architettura Corvette C8 mid-engine, che ha rivoluzionato la filosofia di design della Corvette dopo 66 anni con motore anteriore, mentre i valori di mercato della C7 Z06 usata oscillano tra 50.000 e 75.000 $, a seconda del chilometraggio, del livello di allestimento e degli aggiornamenti documentati sul sistema di raffreddamento.
