La Mini Cooper S R53 rappresenta la variante di prestazioni sovralimentata di prima generazione prodotta dal 2002 al 2006 che ha stabilito le credenziali sportive del MINI moderno attraverso il compressore volumetrico di tipo Roots Eaton M45 che fornisce 163-170 cavalli da un compatto motore a quattro cilindri Tritec da 1,6 litri mantenendo la filosofia di guida da go-kart del Mini originale. Il motore Tritec sovralimentato che produce 163 cavalli a 6.000 giri/min con 155 libbre-piedi di coppia da 4.000 giri/min ha fornito prestazioni sorprendenti raggiungendo 0-60 mph in 7,2 secondi. Il restyling di settembre 2004 ha portato miglioramenti sostanziali incluso aumento di potenza a 170 cavalli attraverso rapporto puleggia compressore rivisto, efficienza intercooler migliorata e gestione motore ricalibrata. La produzione si è conclusa nel 2006 con la Cooper S R56 di seconda generazione che adotta architettura motore turbocompresso sostituendo la configurazione compressore caratteristica, mentre gli esempi R53 mantengono seguito entusiasta dedicato apprezzando semplicità meccanica e affidabilità compressore.
