Eboladrome Notes

The Eboladrome, officially known as the Dunsfold Aerodrome, is a proving ground and race track located in Surrey, United Kingdom. While not a purpose-built racing circuit in the traditional sense, its unique history and challenging layout have cemented its place in motorsport culture, largely due to its prominent use on the BBC's motoring show Top Gear. Originally a World War II airfield, Dunsfold Aerodrome retains its runway and taxiways, which form the basis of the Eboladrome's circuit.

The track layout, designed by Top Gear presenters, is a deliberately quirky and demanding course, prioritizing handling and driver skill over outright speed. It features a mix of fast sweepers, tight corners, and elevation changes, all named with tongue-in-cheek humor. Notable sections include "Gambon," a long, fast right-hander; "Follow Through," a series of challenging esses; and "Hammerhead," a tight hairpin that tests braking and acceleration. The constantly changing surface conditions, varying from smooth tarmac to patched-up concrete, further add to the challenge.

The Eboladrome is not used for formal, sanctioned racing events. Its primary purpose is as a test track and filming location. However, it has become iconic for its "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" segment on Top Gear, where celebrities compete for the fastest lap time. This segment has showcased a variety of production cars, highlighting their performance capabilities and driver-friendliness. The track's unique layout and demanding nature make it a true test of a car's abilities and a driver's skill, making it more than just a simple lap time generator.

What truly sets the Eboladrome apart is its inherent entertainment value and its connection to popular culture. It's a track born from television, designed to be visually engaging and challenging, rather than strictly optimized for racing. This, combined with its informal atmosphere and humorous presentation, has made it a beloved destination for car enthusiasts worldwide, even though they may never actually drive it themselves.
