2005: The S197 Mustang GT launched with a retro-inspired design, powered by a 4.6L SOHC V8 producing 300 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. The car featured a new, more rigid chassis with improved handling and a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission option.
2006: Minor changes included new color options and slight interior updates. A limited-production GT California Special package was introduced with unique bodywork, badging, and interior trim.
2007: The GT/CS (California Special) continued, and the Shelby GT500 was added to the lineup, but the GT itself saw only minor updates with optional packages and colors.
2008: The Bullitt edition was introduced, bringing performance upgrades like a revised intake, sport-tuned suspension, and a 315-hp version of the 4.6L V8. Minor interior and technology improvements were also made.
2010: The S197 received a mid-cycle refresh with updated styling, including a new front and rear fascia, revised interior, and improved materials. The 4.6L V8 stayed at 315 hp but benefited from improved fuel economy and slight handling tweaks.
2011: A major upgrade for the GT, with the introduction of the 5.0L DOHC “Coyote” V8 engine, producing 412 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. This new engine significantly improved performance, and the GT also featured a revised 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. Suspension and braking improvements were also introduced.
2012: The GT continued with the 5.0L Coyote V8 and received slight technology upgrades. A new “Boss 302” variant was introduced, offering track-focused performance, a higher-revving version of the V8 with 444 hp, and enhanced handling with adjustable suspension.
2013: The GT received a subtle refresh with updated front and rear styling, including HID headlights and LED taillights. The Track Package was introduced, adding improved cooling, Brembo brakes, and other performance upgrades. The interior received MyFord Touch and other tech upgrades.
2014: The final year of the S197 generation saw minimal changes, as Ford prepared for the next generation. The GT retained the 5.0L Coyote engine, with some trim and package updates, including additional color options and a commemorative 50th Anniversary package in select markets.
