La designación AP2 distingue este modelo de segunda generación del AP1 original (2000-2003), representando un refinamiento integral de la filosofía purista del roadster de Honda. La evolución mecánica más significativa se centra en el motor: mientras que el AP1 presentaba la célebre unidad F20C de 2.0 litros con un estratosférico régimen máximo de 8,800 RPM, el propulsor F22C de 2.2 litros del AP2 intercambia la capacidad de revoluciones extremas por un rendimiento mejorado en el mundo real. Honda realizó revisiones cruciales en la geometría de suspensión que transformaron el comportamiento del S2000 en pista. Los ingenieros redujeron la convergencia trasera de -0.19 grados a -0.05 grados en deflexión de bache y bajaron el centro de balanceo trasero de 101mm a 92mm, abordando la tendencia del AP1 hacia el sobreviraje repentino en el límite. Combinado con resortes más suaves y barras estabilizadoras revisadas, estos cambios crearon una plataforma más progresiva y predecible que recompensa la conducción hábil sin las características de filo de navaja que desafiaban a algunos conductores del AP1. La transmisión recibió sincronizadores de fibra de carbono reemplazando las unidades de latón del AP1, reduciendo el peso mientras mejoraba la calidad del cambio, con relaciones de engranajes acortadas un 4% de primera a cuarta y una sexta marcha ligeramente más larga para un crucero relajado en autopista.

El AP2 demuestra un equilibrio excepcional gracias a su perfecta distribución de peso 50/50 y su compacta distancia entre ejes de 2,400mm, registrando tiempos de vuelta impresionantes en diversos circuitos—desde recintos técnicos como Motorsport Ranch (1:20.0) hasta trazados de alta velocidad como Chuckwalla Valley Raceway (1:58.6). El chasis permanece compuesto bajo frenadas intensas y entrega una respuesta precisa al entrar en las curvas, mientras que la suspensión revisada permite a los conductores explotar todo el potencial de rendimiento con mayor confianza que el ocasionalmente nervioso AP1.
Para el máximo rendimiento en pista, Honda ofreció la edición S2000 Club Racer (CR) en 2008-2009, produciendo solo 699 ejemplares. El CR presentaba una cremallera de dirección más rápida, suspensión más rígida, neumáticos traseros más anchos (255/40R-17 Bridgestone Potenza RE070), y una agresiva reducción de peso incluyendo aire acondicionado y estéreo eliminados (opcionales como complementos), ahorrando 90 libras. Las distintivas llantas negras del CR, interior de Alcantara amarillo e indicador luminoso de potencia máxima identificaban esta variante enfocada en pista, que ahora alcanza más de $108,000 comparado con su MSRP original de $36,935.
El mercado de accesorios abrazó la plataforma AP2 con entusiasmo, con modificaciones populares incluyendo sintonización ECU Hondata FlashPro (elevando el límite de revoluciones a 8,600 RPM), mejoras de admisión y escape, y componentes de suspensión avanzados de fabricantes como KW y Ohlins.
