Die Chevrolet Corvette C5, produziert von 1997 bis 2004, stellte eine bedeutende Evolution für die Corvette dar und führte ein raffinierteres Design, verbesserte Leistung und modernisierte Technologie ein. Auf einer neuen Plattform aufgebaut, verfügte die C5 über eine leichte, aber steife Struktur, die Handling und Stabilität erheblich verbesserte. Sie wurde vom brandneuen LS1-5,7-Liter-V8-Motor angetrieben, der zunächst 345 PS erzeugte und später auf 350 PS erhöht wurde, was starke Beschleunigung und ein befriedigendes V8-Brummen lieferte. Gepaart mit entweder einem 6-Gang-Schaltgetriebe oder einem 4-Gang-Automatikgetriebe erreichte die C5 beeindruckende Leistung und beschleunigte in unter 5 Sekunden von 0 auf 100 km/h.
Das Design der C5 war eine Mischung aus klassischen Corvette-Styling-Elementen mit einer aerodynamischeren, stromlinienförmigeren Form. Erhältlich als Coupé, Cabrio und später als Hardtop mit festem Dach, bot sie Vielseitigkeit für verschiedene Fahrerlebnisse. Innen verfügte die C5 über eine fahrerzentriertere und komfortablere Kabine als frühere Modelle, mit verbesserter Ergonomie, Ledersitzen und einem aktualisierten digital-analogen Instrumenten-Cluster. Die C5 führte auch Funktionen wie ein Head-up-Display und ein aktives Handhabungssystem ein, was sie zu einem bedeutenden Sprung nach vorne sowohl in Leistung als auch Technologie für die Corvette-Baureihe machte.
