2001: Subaru launched the second generation Impreza models in the Japanese market for the 2001 Model year.
2002: The WRX STi GD/GG debuted in international markets, including a significant release in the United States with the GD chassis. The U.S. model had the 2.0L EJ205 engine with slightly less power than the Japanese version. Other markets received different tuning, but all models retained the signature all-wheel-drive system and sport-tuned suspension.
2003: Subaru introduced minor updates, including interior refinements and new exterior colors. The STi models continued to focus on performance with adjustable center differentials for enhanced traction. The Japanese model also saw slight updates in engine management for improved efficiency.
2004: This year marked the introduction of the “Blobeye” facelift for the GD model. The U.S. market received the WRX STi with the larger 2.5L EJ257 engine, producing around 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. It featured Brembo brakes, Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD), a large rear wing, and unique STi seats, setting it apart from the standard WRX. The international versions received similar upgrades, with the EJ207 engine remaining in Japan.
2005: Subaru made slight improvements to handling with stiffer suspension settings and minor interior updates for better comfort and convenience. The WRX STi maintained its distinctive performance-focused design, with minimal changes in powertrain but further fine-tuning of the all-wheel-drive system.
