La Honda Civic Type R FK8 représente le fer de lance des performances de la Civic de dixième génération, produite de 2017 à 2021 en tant que hot hatch traction avant établissant de nouveaux standards en termes de temps au tour sur le Nürburgring et de capacités sur circuit. Animée par un quatre cylindres en ligne K20C1 turbo de 2.0L développant 306 chevaux à 6 500 tr/min et 295 lb-pi de couple, couplé exclusivement à une boîte manuelle six vitesses entraînant les roues avant via un différentiel à glissement limité à engrenages hélicoïdaux, la FK8 a offert une envelope de performance inédite, remplaçant l’ancienne FK2 atmosphérique à traction. Affichant un poids de 3 117 livres, la Type R a su tirer parti d’un rapport poids-puissance remarquable, permettant un 0-60 mph en 4,9 secondes et une vitesse maximale dépassant les 169 mph, tandis que son kit aérodynamique agressif, comprenant un large aileron arrière, un splitter avant et une carrosserie sculptée, générait une véritable déportance plutôt qu’un simple effet esthétique. La suspension intégrait des amortisseurs adaptatifs, une géométrie avant à double axe éliminant le couple de lacet et un train arrière multibras assurant un équilibre de tenue de route exceptionnel qui a brisé les idées reçues sur les limites des tractions avant, culminant avec un chrono de 7:43.8 sur la Nordschleife du Nürburgring, établissant le record de la catégorie pour une voiture de série traction avant lors de sa sortie. L’habitacle proposait des sièges sport enveloppés d’Alcantara avec un maintien latéral exceptionnel, des badges Type R rouges disséminés dans la cabine, un combiné d’instruments numérique affichant en temps réel les données de performance telles que les forces G et la pression de suralimentation, tout en offrant une praticité surprenante grâce à son utilité de hayon, préservant une usage quotidien malgré le caractère ultra sportif. La production s’est déclinée d’abord en spécification 2017-2018 puis en restylage 2020 intégrant des mises à jour cosmétiques mineures, un réglage affiné des amortisseurs et un système d’infodivertissement amélioré tout en conservant le bloc mécanique principal. Parmi les éditions limitées figuraient les teintes Championship White et Sonic Gray Pearl, rendant hommage aux livrées traditionnelles Type R, ainsi que la finition Sport Line destinée au marché européen, proposant une apparence extérieure discrète en supprimant le large aileron arrière pour les acheteurs privilégiant une esthétique plus discrète. La FK8 a directement affronté la Volkswagen Golf R, la Ford Focus RS et la Renault Mégane RS dans le segment des hot hatch les plus radicaux, se distinguant par sa philosophie de transmission exclusivement manuelle, une dynamique de conduite naturellement engageante et son engagement ferme envers la configuration traction avant alors que la concurrence adoptait de plus en plus des systèmes à transmission intégrale. La production s’est achevée en 2021 avec la toute dernière Limited Edition arborant une livrée Sunlight Yellow et des jantes légères forgées BBS, laissant place à la onzième génération FL5 Type R poursuivant l’évolution du bloc turbo avec un châssis revisité et un design extérieur polarisant.
