El Honda Civic Type R FK8 representa la punta de lanza del rendimiento de la décima generación del Civic, producido entre 2017 y 2021 como un hot hatch de tracción delantera que estableció nuevos récords en tiempos de vuelta en Nürburgring y capacidad en pista para vehículos FWD. Impulsado por un motor turboalimentado K20C1 de 2.0L de cuatro cilindros en línea que entrega 306 caballos de fuerza a 6,500 rpm y 295 lb-ft de torque, acoplado exclusivamente a una transmisión manual de seis velocidades que transmite la potencia a las ruedas delanteras mediante un diferencial de deslizamiento limitado helicoidal, el FK8 ofreció un rendimiento sin precedentes en comparación con su predecesor natural aspirado y de tracción delantera, el FK2. Con un peso de 3,117 libras, el Type R alcanzó una dinámica peso-potencia notable, permitiendo una aceleración de 0 a 60 mph en 4.9 segundos y una velocidad máxima superior a 169 mph, mientras que su agresivo paquete aerodinámico, que incluye un prominente alerón trasero, splitter delantero y carrocería esculpida, generaba carga aerodinámica genuina y no meros efectos estéticos. La suspensión contaba con amortiguadores adaptativos, una geometría delantera con puntal de doble eje que elimina el torque steer y un esquema trasero multi-link que permitió un equilibrio de manejo excepcional, rompiendo preconceptos sobre las limitaciones de la tracción delantera. Así, logró un tiempo de vuelta de 7:43.8 en el Nürburgring Nordschleife, estableciendo un récord para coches de producción con tracción delantera en su lanzamiento. El interior presentaba asientos deportivos tapizados en Alcantara con un soporte lateral excepcional, emblemas Type R en rojo distribuidos por la cabina, un cuadro de instrumentos digital que mostraba datos de rendimiento en tiempo real, incluyendo fuerzas g y presión de turbo, y sorpresivamente una utilidad práctica de hatchback que mantenía la usabilidad diaria pese a su enfoque de alto rendimiento. La producción abarcó la especificación inicial de 2017-2018 y una actualización en 2020 que introdujo leves cambios cosméticos, un ajuste refinado de los amortiguadores y un sistema de infoentretenimiento mejorado, manteniendo el paquete mecánico fundamental. Las versiones de edición limitada incluyeron opciones de pintura Championship White y Sonic Gray Pearl que homenajeaban las combinaciones de colores históricas del Type R, además de la línea Sport Line para mercados europeos, que presentaba un aspecto exterior más discreto al eliminar el prominente alerón trasero, para compradores que preferían una estética más camuflada. El FK8 compitió directamente contra el Volkswagen Golf R, Ford Focus RS y Renault Megane RS en el segmento de hot hatches hardcore, diferenciándose por su filosofía de transmisión exclusivamente manual, dinámica de conducción natural y un compromiso inquebrantable con la configuración de tracción delantera, frente a competidores que cada vez más adoptaban sistemas de tracción total. La producción concluyó en 2021 con la última variante Limited Edition que incorporó pintura Sunlight Yellow y ligeras llantas forjadas BBS, siendo sucedido por la undécima generación FL5 Type R que continuó la evolución del tren motriz turbo con un chasis revisado y un diseño exterior polarizante.
