2002: Initial production featuring Eaton M45 supercharged 1.6L Tritec engine with 163hp/155 lb-ft, Getrag six-speed manual or CVT automatic, 16-inch run-flat tires, center-exit dual exhausts, bonnet scoop, comprehensive aero package. JCW 200hp tuning kit available. Mini Challenge racing series launched.
2003: Continued unchanged specification maintaining 163hp output. Expanded JCW accessory catalog including suspension kits, brake upgrades, aerodynamic components. Growing aftermarket support from specialist tuners addressing enthusiast modification demands.
2004: Major September facelift: power increased to 170hp through revised supercharger pulley and improved intercooler, larger headlights, new bonnet/bumper design, updated taillights, expanded color options. JCW kit upgraded to 210hp specification. Optional six-speed automatic transmission introduced.
2005: Continued post-facelift specification with 170hp. JCW GP limited edition announced: 2,000 global units, 218hp, rear seats deleted, aggressive bodykit, track suspension, lightweight wheels. Increased focus on personalization options through MINI's extensive accessories program.
2006: Final R53 production year maintaining 170hp specification. JCW GP deliveries completed. Production concluded autumn 2006 with R56 second-generation introduction adopting turbocharged engine replacing supercharger architecture. Total UK production exceeded 130,000 units.
